How do guys get golfy?
It occurred to me that pictures of me and our Sammie in our golfy best are fun and cute and might help out some of the Second Life golf community, there were legions of male golfers who might not benefit from the knowledge that Cynful makes a cute golfy skirt or True Damage makes a fantastic women’s polo. Since my knowledge of men’s fashion extends no further than ‘jeans make your backside look great’ and ‘tuxedos are really sharp’, I needed help.
After putting out the call on the Rainbow Golf Links group, I was eventually answered by Ogre Darkheart. Ogre was kind enough to agree to an interview and brief fashion show. (Plus he was a super patient and cooperative model, which I really appreciate!)
Keyli Daltrey: We’ve only met once on the course, so let’s kinda do the basics. How long have you been a Second Life resident?
Ogre Darkheart: I’ll be three on the 24th of February.
KD: So you’re pretty young then! Gonna do anything for your third rez-day?
OD: Yes. My RL birthday is the 19th and I’m having a joint party with my boss/bestie; her’s is the 24th.
KD: That’s awesome! Happy early birthday to both you guys!
So down to golf, what’s your history with golf in SL – how long have you played?
OD: I’ve been playing for four weeks.
KD: No kidding? Just a month? That’s fantastic! I love seeing the sport grow – that makes me smile. What clubs do you play with?
OD: TrueGolf. I played both and went with TrueGolf because of the “ban” at some courses.
KD: Now that is an interesting response – can you go a little deeper into that for me?
OD: I look at it this way: If someone tells me, “Don’t use this” because of whatever reason, I’m gonna look into why you don’t want me using them. I went and tried them (the TrueGolf clubs) and liked them better. It is just silly to me why they would ban them so those three courses lose out on more players…makes no sense.
KD: I couldn’t agree more. Thanks for explaining your thinking on it to me. Alright, so we’re here to talk about men’s golf fashion today, and I really appreciate you talking with me about it today.
So when someone brings up a topic as kind of nebulous as ‘men’s golf fashion’, what kind of things do you think of – what makes up attractive menswear on the course?
OD: The fit and the attention to detail of the avatar wearing it. A lot of guys don’t seem to care how their avi looks, so how can the clothes possibly look good? You ladies take the time, so can I.
KD: I wanna start getting into the kinds of things you wear on the course, but let’s start with the basics. What mesh body and head do you use?
OD: (Belleza) Jake and (Lelutka) EvoX.

KD: Tell me a little bit about the outfit you’re wearing.
OD: I found the pants on the Marketplace by chance…they fit great. The shoes and hat come with it, and all are completely customizable. The shirt (that comes with the outfit) is long sleeved, so I don’t use it. They are by Amazing Creations. The top is a 40-color fatpack from Lapointe & Bastchild.
KD: Oooooooooooh. Love L&B. Big fan.

KD: So…let’s say a summer evening has rolled around here at Rainbow Valley North. What are you wearing?
OD: Fashion Fantasy for Men jeans overall with color HUD.
KD: It’s super fun and unconventional – I LOVE that!
KD: So, I have a hard time finding cute polo shirts for golf, and I have no idea where I can find rigged golf spikes. Are there any items for men you wish Second Life designers made more of?
OD: Hats that auto-alpha your hair where the hat is…
KD: Okay! Last one – do you carry a golf bag when you play?
OD: No. The reason being I wish they would sell a mod blank to texture myself.
KD: So like a completely featureless one you could make entirely your own?
OD: Yes. I do a lot of texturing for the race cars I paint and build. Love makng textures.
KD: Thanks again for sitting down with me. We cover a lot of images and details regarding women’s golf fashion and it was good to feature some men’s clothing.
OD: Thank you so much. I really appreciate it, men don’t get much coverage in SL
KD: Hopefully we can change that. 🙂 And I’m looking forward to playing a round together sometime real soon.
If you think you’ve got a unique take on golf fashion, give me a shout! I’d love to talk to you. As you can see from Ogre’s summer outfit, there’s a lot of room for variety and experimentation in golf fashion, and I love seeing the fantastic looks our community comes up with.
Until next time, fairways and greens, y’all!
