Golf at the SL Sci-Fi Convention

Maybe you’ve been to a science fiction convention. And I’m sure you’ve seen the seemingly unending array of golf courses being promoted, club designers, fashion vendors, and golf pros charging crazy money for their autographs. That’s happened to you, right?

Right?

Okay, no, it hasn’t. Which didn’t stop me from trying to make it happen here in SL. Second Links has a booth at the Second Life Science Fiction Convention! I know this sounds crazy. Luke never complained to Yoda about the water hazards on Dagobah, Kirk and Spock never played a round on Vulcan, and The Doctor never bragged about his hole-in-one back on Gallifrey. It’s hard to find an intersection between science fiction and golf.

But that doesn’t mean I’m not gonna try!

The Second Links booth! Yeah…it’s a work in progress.

Sci-Fi Con 17 starts on May 23 and runs through June 4. The Second Life Science Fiction convention is one of my favorite events in SL. It spans nine sims, each sim dedicated to a different aspect of sci-fi. Even better, 100% of the proceeds go to the Michael J. Fox Foundation supporting research into curing Parkinson’s disease. They’ve done tremendous work in the past, donating tens of thousands of dollars to the cause over the life of the convention.

This is actually my third time operating a booth at the Sci-Fi con. Each time has been such a neat, unique experience and I’ve loved it every year. Sammie and I get to put together some fantastic cosplay and explore some truly spectacular builds, see some incredible costumes, and usually get some neat freebies and/or fun stuff on sale from the vendors there.

Poppy and Chelsea have been kind enough to let us show off some really cool stuff from TrueGolf, as well as a swing simulator for folks who maybe haven’t tried golf in Second Life to get an idea of how it looks. I’ve got a lot of images from the Rainbow Golf Flickr as well as a bunch I’ve taken to try and show off just how truly outstanding our game and our community is.

That said, I could really use more great golf photos! If you’ve got any family-friendly images in your inventory and want to share them with everyone who stops by the booth, please feel free to send them over to keyliikkin resident! I’ll make sure they get added to the slide show. (If you’ve got any when you and your squad are playing in costume, even better! Just make sure the images are rated PG; they’re very big on keeping the convention accessible for sci-fi enthusiasts of all ages.)

I really hope y’all will check out the convention and stop by the booth. It really is one of the most unique events in Second Life, and you’ll help me prove to the superheroes, Klingons, Sith lords, Steampunk pirates, and anime blademasters that golfers are out-of-this-world. And if you see one of those folks at the booth, tell them to Live Long and go pick up a rental set. 😉

(Out of this world? That was so, so bad…)

I’m going to be holding a giveaway from the booth! You’ll have to stop by to enter once the event goes live on May 23.
